The Modern Technique of the Pistol

Technically, it’s not written by Jeff Cooper, but by Greg Morrison, with Cooper as “Editorial Adviser”. However, this book, laying out the details of what is now somewhat awkwardly called the Modern Technique, is absolutely a product of Cooper’s work. It is only slightly dated in its content, and can serve the student of pistolcraft as well today as when it was written.

Cooper, for all his writing and other contributions to shooting, is most well-known for the development and teaching of the Modern Technique, starting with experiments going back to the 1950s and culminating in the first-ever private “shooting school” which he opened in 1976. He intended Morrison’s book to be the definitive text for teaching this developed doctrine.

The Modern Technique brought pistolcraft out of a long period of stagnation and into the realm of true science, and even art. Since its development, there have been a number of worthy refinements, but the core ideas and principles remain sound, and worth learning.
